Are You A Phone DJ?

<< Main Reports  Main Reports >>

technics turntableMixDJ, a new application from NXP Software allows one to use their cell phone to create gapless creations from the audio tracks saved on one’s phone! I used to be a competitive DJ when I was younger and this was when digital music was in it’s infancy. Regardless of the time, a true DJ (disc jockey) would use vinyl records…hehe, for the younger readers this is a 12″ vinyl disc played on a turntable. The weapon of choice for DJ’s was the Technics MK 1200 pictured on the right here, and even till this day with all the improvements in technology this turntable has not change much! Why change a proven commodity right? The controls allowed one to change the speed of the music thus making it easier to match beats and enable one to create mixes. In order to see the extreme of this watch this video of my all time favorite DJ’s, DJ Qbert. He performs multiple scratching (moving a record back and forth while switching the fader on and off..thus creating a “skratch” sound) and beat matching with his partner D-styles.

A bit more extreme but awesome right? Well, technology has allowed us to create CD mixers where you can emulate the scratching sound and I’m not sure MP3 mixers can do this yet but no matter what the purist way to do this is with an “old school” record player. I’m sure in the future there will be an application that will allow us to just play with music in a virtual space and be a virtual dj…hehe and then who knows what else!

For now we can just make do what we may have…and that is using this MixDJ software that can take tracks from your cell phone and blend them so you can act like a phone DJ. I’m ready…now when can we have it?
