What Is Videoconferencing?

<< Main Reports  Main Reports >>

Most of our previous articles have been covering the benefits of audio conferencing for your business. With the increase of broadband internet access across the globe, the use of videoconferencing is becoming much easier to use and implement in your business.

Videoconferencing is basically a technology that allows two or more than two people sitting in different locations to interact with each other as long as they have internet connection. The interaction is usually in real time with the participants being able to see and talk to each other.

Current technology also makes it possible to display documents, allow the use of whiteboards and exchange video or audio clips, graphics and even animations. This makes the use of videoconferencing a highly versatile tool to educate, hold meetings and disseminate information.

Videoconferencing was actually first developed in late 1960s. But due to the complexity of the technology at that time its use was limited to NASA and some government agencies. It was only in the 1990s that videoconferencing began becoming popular, thanks to the development of high-speed telecom lines and IP-based communication technology.

At that time only large companies could afford videoconferencing because the cost of setting up a studio was at least around $50,000. But today individuals can conduct videoconferences using the web conferencing tools available with a fraction of the investment. Video and audio data can be compressed with the help of coders/decoders which are popularly called codecs, which are then transmitted over the net or high bandwidth telecom lines

There is not that much equipment necessary to hold a videoconference. The main equipment that is required to conduct a videoconference is video camera or web cam for video input, a computer monitor, television or projector for video output; microphones for audio input and speakers for audio output. The data itself is then transferred over telephone lines, wide area network or the Internet.

It is possible today to conduct videoconferencing across multiple remote points with the help of a Multipoint Control Unit (MCU). In this form of videoconferencing, all parties call the MCU that acts as a bridge. The MCU can also call all participants, and conduct the videoconference with the help of an operator.
